Estimating the location of social frontiers raises a number of methodological challenges. The method must allow for 'open' boundaries as many frontiers will not enclose a community but only occur along a section of its perimeter. Frontier estimation also needs to exclude spatial discontinuities that occur by chance. Social frontiers can also occur in multiple dimensions and are dynamic phenomena, emerging, evolving and declining over time.
